Happily, today was a short ride through Wisconsin dairy land. The beginning of the ride featured Lake Winnebago and the end brought us to the shore of Lake Michigan, which will take four hours to cross by ferry tomorrow.

For the most part, today’s ride was about getting to the hotel in time to do laundry. Ride, grab luggage, change into street clothes, and taxi to the laundromat. “Rest day” is a misnomer because there are always a million things that need to be done. The butt is the only part that gets a rest.

We’ve completed the fourth leg of this journey (two to go!) and seen all kinds of farm animals. Bev greets all of them. Hi cows! Hi horses! Hi goats! Good morning chickens! Yesterday she yelled “Hi pig!” and it squealed in return. Occasionally, a cow will moo back at her. It’s like riding with a hot Dr. Doolittle. Riding along and hearing Bev call out to all of the animals always makes me smile. It’s also nice to see animals that don’t chase us on our bikes.

It’s hard to believe that we’ll be in Niagara Falls in a week. This trip keeps going by quickly.

A pre-ride bike socks fashion show?
An early stop at a lighthouse on Lake Winnebago.
We’re in Amish country.
HI BEV! Thanks for saying hi to us llamas, chickens, and goats.
Greg and our friend Deb rolling across Wisconsin.
Bev with her pal Chris (R) and his new tandem leader, James. Bev adores Chris and I think it’s mutual.

  1. Moooooooo!
Bev, I do the same thing and talk to all the critters along the way. I had horses run along side me once- made my day!
P.S I’m with you regarding “just show up and ride,” and let Sherpa’s do the real work! Enjoy Wisconsin!!

  2. Glad you’re riding further north and avoiding most of the terrible storms! About calling out to the animals, I would do the same thing as Bev. There used to be a semi-wild turkey living not far from us. My husband used to roll down the car window and gobble at the turkey. The turkey always answered. I loved that. 🙂

  3. Yahoo! 4 legs complete and now a big long boat ride and an adventure into Canada! We had a gully washer of a storm last night. It’s been really hot and dry since Team Pea has left. Miss you!

  4. Sounds like you and Bev are having a good time. Keep having fun and making great memories. Enjoy your rest day and a safe next ride.

  5. Hi Greg and Bev,
I am a friend of Lindy Curtis and asked that she add me to your blog. I am enjoying all of your entries so much!! My boyfriend (future husband, not yet fiance, all in good time…) has this idea that we can do this same trip in a year or two totally on our own. It will take at least twice as long the way I figure it but you are giving me some idea of what lies ahead. Hasn’t scared me off yet! Thanks so much! You are my heroes!!

    1. It is great to see America from a bicycle seat. I am glad, however, that someone else is handling all the logistics so I only have to show up and ride. We have seen a bunch of riders along the way who are doing self-supported rides – very impressive.

  6. That’s how Bev and I were raised ! I talk to farm animals all the time when I pass them. Have been known to roll down my window for a little chat! Apparently, that has never happened to the llama in your picture..did you see its face ?!?!?!? LOL !!
